15 October 2008


A good turn out of members listen to John Wutz who was the guest speaker for the evening.  John is the contact person for the Hawke's Bay branch of the New Zealand Mountain Safety Council.  John gave a very informative and wide ranging presentation on safety in New Zealand's great outdoors with particular reference to rivers.  John also demonstrated the Emergency Locator Beacons that he is able to hire to anglers, at a cost of $2.50 per day. These beacons would be invaluable to members who explore remote areas of the bush in search of back country fishing experiences.

This meeting saw another popular fly tying evening, with demonstrations of patterns which were likely to prove popular when the samller streams and rivers opened on the 1st October.

Following on from the successful evening in 2007, Hamills Hawke's Bay again hosted a club meeting at their store in Nelson Street, Hastings.  Owner Jeremy Hannary had many specials and promotions on hand for members and Rene Vaz was the guest speaker.  Rene shared many of his experiences with members and also outlined the products that his new company "Manic Tackle" are wholesaling to fishing shops.   

 

20 August 2008

16 Members attended the 43rd AGM of the club.  Mark Hyett presented his 7th report as President.  He reported that the club was in good heart and summarised many of the highlights of the past year.  Mark also announced that he would be standing down from the position of President and received the thanks of the club for his significant contribution to the leadership of the club for the past 7 years.  Long standing committee member and club captain Murray Boaler also announced that he would be standing down.  He also received a vote of thanks from the members present.  Vice President Brent Simonsen was elected unopposed to the position of President and all other positions in the club were filled by members in attendance.  The meeting was a friendly and pleasant affair which finished in good time to allow refreshments to be enjoyed.

Fly Fishing techniques with Gary Harlen.  The meeting covered the following points; how to tie your own knotted leaders and the different types of nylon on the market, casting strategies, what techniques to use when you catch a fish and how to keep “ in touch” with the fish and how to land a fish quickly.

Gary has a simple approach to fishing and that is why he is so good at it.  A very informative evening.

Gary will be holding a practical fishing clinic on the Tuki Tuki River in October or November. The river needs a little time to settle down. Members will be informed when this clinic will take place.

The second of the fly tying evenings had members attempt the popular Copper John pattern. 
Many variations and techniques were shared between members for this pattern.

This meeting had a group of members report back on their recent trip to the Central Plateau.  Members stayed in Ohakune and fished a number of rivers in the local area.

This fly tying night was spent tying small wet flies which can be very productive on Hawkes Bay rivers.  Members shared a wide range of materials that can be used to tie these patterns.

At this meeting A slide show of the many photos that had been taken at the Commonwealth Fly Fishing championships was presented and many tales and stories were recounted of the events and personalities involved in this event.

The guest speaker at this meeting was the well known local fishing retailer, guide and Fish and Game counsellor, Dave Hern.  Dave led a wide ranging discussion on a variety of topics including: Angling Regulations, Local Rivers, Guiding and New Products and Techniques.
 

2 April 2008

The evening of Wednesday 2 April saw a fly tying competition conducted between two person teams from each Commonwealth country .  This event was organised and generously sponsored by Nate Jarvis, General Manager of Feather Merchants New Zealand.

The competition required each two person team to tie three flies.  A Royal Wulff, a Woolly Bugger and a fly of their own creation.  Points were awarded for replication, neatness and innovation.  Teams were given sixty minutes to come up with their best efforts for each fly.  On hand was Russell Anderson a fly designer from
                                                   Feather Merchants to judge the results.  This night also doubled as
                                                   the regular Wednesday club night for the club and it was great to
                                                   see so many members turn out to support it.

The March meeting had as the guest speaker Iain Maxwell, the newly appointed manager of Hawkes Bay Fish and Game.  Iain presented information on data collected on local rivers in response to recent media attention.  He also had a slide show of photos taken from a survey carried out in the upper Ngaruroro where Fish and Game are trying to gain information on this unique fishery.

Murray Boaler and Brent Simonsen gave a slide show of their trip to the headwaters of the Mohaka River for opening weekend of 2007.  Some stunning photos were shown and interesting accounts of the trip were relayed to the members present.
 
21 November 2007

Murray Boaler gave a brief talk on a recent fishing expedition to the Hangaroa River.  While this destination is a 3.5 hour drive from Hastings it certainly is worth the effort.  The Hangaroa has many spots which have good access from public roads and provides a range of water for both fly and spin fishing.

 

7 November 2007

A large turnout of members enjoyed a presentation by Stuart Kelly from Harvey Norman.  Stuart is in charge of the digital photography department and shared with members his extensive knowledge of photography in the outdoors.  He demonstrated a digital camera that is ideal for the fisherman with many features that are required when you are near rivers and lakes.  Stuart then critiqued a number of photos supplied by members giving simple but valuable advice on how the shot could be improved.

The third and final fly tying night for 2007 was held at this meeting with members tackling a range of flies demonstrated by some of the more experienced fly tiers in the club.  A good turn out of enthusiastic members concluded a very interesting series of fly tying nights for 2007.

Members were treated to an enthusiastic and informative presentation by Nate Jarvis, General Manager of Feather Merchants NZ Ltd.  Nate covered a wide range of products that Feather Merchants supply to NZ retailers starting at Tiemco hooks and progressing through fly tying materials, lines and tippets, reels and finishing with Temple Fork rods.  To finish the evening Nate distributed to those present a selection of Umpqua flies for members to test out on rivers in the next few weeks.

Hamills Hastings hosted this meeting at their Nelson Street premises.  Managing Director Jeremy Hannary and Fishing Manager Eddie Douglas provided members with information on the latest products and generous specials and discounts were offered to members attending.  Hamills also provided complimentary refreshments which were well received by all who attended.

 


5 September 2007

The first meeting in September was the clubs AGM.  A good turn out of members listened to and endorsed the Presidents and Treasurers reports for the 2006-2007 club year.  This was followed by the election of officers which proceeded with its normal efficiency. With no general business the meeting concluded in under an hour and members then enjoyed some refreshments and socialising.
 

15 August 2007

The second of the evenings on fly tying was conducted at this meeting where the tricky task of constructing dry flies was attempted by members.  A very simple and straight forward Elk hair Caddis was the first fly tied successfully by most members and then Murray Boaler demonstrated his famous Blowfly which proved a more challenging proposition.  Nevertheless the members present managed this task with varying success and a lot of fun was had in the process.
 
1 August 2007

This meeting was devoted to discussing winter fishing opportunities and techniques for this time of the year.  Murray Boaler presented a collection of photos to illustrate what is possible both locally and in the Taupo region.  The night was rounded off with a DVD by Jim Teeny showing techniques you can use to set up fly lines and leaders.

 

18 July 2007

This meeting saw the first in a series of nights in which members will learn the basics of fly tying by some of the more experienced club members.  Tying nymphs was the theme of this first night.


4 July 2007

Steve Wheeler a highly regarded local knife maker was the guest speaker.  Steve was in good form as per usual.  His knowledge and skill in his profession of knife making is so highly regarded here in New Zealand and around the world.  Steve is certainly a fantastic craftsman and all there were astounded on how much time and effort can go into making a top quality knife that will last a life time and more.  On show were a couple of his Japanese Swords that looked amazing, you can see why the price of several thousand dollars turns these particular items into collector pieces.  One or two purchases were made at the end of the evening.  All in all a very informative evening.

Well known fishing identity and author Gary Kemsley presented a well prepared talk on Lake Tutira.  He outlined the changes in the lake and fishing over the years and the times and techniques he finds the best at the present time.  As always Gary sprinkled his popular brand of humour through the talk and members were left enthused at the opportunities that this underrated fishery provides.

The MP for the Tuki Tuki electorate Craig Foss attended the meeting.  He spoke on the recently released Land Access report and his opinions on its recommendations and where NZ as a country should go from here.  He then responded to a wide range of questions from members on issues related to the environment and water access and use.

 

16 May 2007

Brendon Matthews author of 'Volcanic Trout' presented an informative evening on fishing the Taupo region.  His intimate knowledge of fishing locations in this region was impressive and members were able to have many of their questions answered on this area.  Brendon covered many topics during the evening and was a lively and entertaining speaker.  While the Tongariro dominated discussions, Brendon alluded to many other fishing opportunities in the region.  This evening was timely with the winter spawning runs due to commence over the next few months.  Brendon generously donated an auto graphed copy of his book to be raffled off by the club.
 

2 May 2007

Brent Simonsen lead a discussion on fly fishing rod and rig setups.  Healthy debate centred around the different types of line and leader set ups that can be used on local rivers and the advantages and disadvantages of each method.

18 April 2007

The annual trout cooking and tasting evening was attending by an enthusiastic gathering of members.  Initially members were shown a number of different techniques for filleting trout and tricks and tips for removing bones from your fillets.  Then various members demonstrated their favourite ways of preparing trout for eating.  Due to a recent club trip to the Mohaka River there was no shortage of trout to prepare and sample during the evening.

 

 

4 April 2007

Allan Lee from DOC gave a presentation on the work he carries out in the Hawkes Bay region.  Pest eradication is one of his major tasks and he had on display some of the technology used in these programmes.  Allan also had examples of native plants and animals that anglers are likely to come across when they are in the back country areas of Hawkes Bay.

Over 100 members and anglers from the local community attended the Hugh McDowell evening in which Hugh recounted many stories (and a few jokes) from his lifetime of fishing in over 20 countries.  Hugh covered both the rich history of freshwater angling as well as the unique opportunities that exist in many countries at the present time.  A brief auction of some fly fishing merchandised was also held with local auctioneer Andrew Holt persuading those present to part with over $1000 of their money.  Some of the items Hugh had personalised especially for the event which obviously added to their value.

The first meeting of March saw Brian Cottington show members a DVD on fly casting.  The many techniques available were illustrated on the DVD and along with the mechanics behind casting.

21 February 2007


Murray Boaler, Neil Hollebone and Barry Daly recounted their trip into the upper Ngaruroro with nine other club members on the fly in trip organised by the club last November.  Many slides of the trip were shown which gave members a rare insight into this beautiful area of the Kaweka Forest Park.  There was much enthusiasm generated from this meeting for further planned trips in the future.

 

7 February 2007

John Scott and Gary Harlen delivered an interesting presentation on fishing drop off's on the Tuki Tuki river.  They showed twenty minutes of video footage from the previous weekend to illustrate some of the techniques they use including the playing and landing of fish.  To conclude the evening they demonstrated some of their favoured rig set ups and how to use split shot to add extra weight.

The first meeting of the year saw a good turn out of members who listened to a presentation by
Dave Renouf, Bill Dodds and John Scott on the Tuki Tuki river.  Members were informed of the
role the Hawkes Bay Regional Council plays in managing this valuable resource.  They outlined the range
of activities that impact on the overall health of the river and what can be done to minimise the
 negative consequences of these activities.
